Sammy’s Mountain Marbles (2012–2013)
Between July 2012 and September 2013, marble artist Sammy Hogue partnered with Dave McCullough, former production manager at JABO Inc., to produce a series of machine-made marbles in Pennsboro, West Virginia. Though Sammy was already known for his handmade creations, this collaboration allowed him to explore mass production while preserving the aesthetic depth of his earlier work. This marked a brief but beloved chapter in modern American marble-making, blending artistry, friendship, and innovation.
Over 14 months, they completed 16 distinct runs, crafting 5/8" marbles with vivid swirls, frit, and occasional Lutz sparkle. These weren’t just toys—they were miniature canvases, often loaded with color complexity and subtle glasswork. Some runs were named, like Buddy 1, Spring Edition, Tin Lizzy, and Ladies Touch, each with its own visual identity and collector appeal.
Though Sammy remained somewhat private about the project and didn’t widely sell the marbles, collectors prize them for their limited availability, artistic integrity, and the story they represent—a fusion of tradition and experimentation, rooted in community and craftsmanship.
Your purchases support marble making in America, allow me to continue to sell great marbles for excellent prices and to photograph and share these marbles for posterity.
